The Baitones – Duke of Enmore

Straight out of the school of the Cramps, the Baitones got to bring their voodoo to The Duke of Enmore in Sydney for a night of wild fuzzy reverb. Supporting them were the punked up tex mex Mezcaltones and mysterious Dirtbag.

Dirtbag

Opening the night was the one man band, man of mystery, Dirtbag. Sidling onto the drum kit, with a couple of kick pedals to smash away to and a six string guitar to thrash.

Headgear was a hessian sack with a couple of crosses for eyes and a frowny face drawn on for a bit of emotion, but the sound was pure reverb soaked garage thrash with lamenting hiccuppy bebopaloola vocals and the odd growl that would make Jerry Lee Lewis proud.

Where did he come from? Where is he going?? Just look out for the signs to catch up with Dirtbag next time they surface.

Mezcaltones

The Mezcaltones are a sight to behold. Tricked out in black country punk wear, big hats and a couple of skeleton onesies complete with day of the dead makeup.

The sound was definitely south of the border, but punked up to spaghetti western ELEVEN with plenty of twangy reverb soaked surf guitar and beefy ridealong bass.

Lots of theatrics on stage, arms and legs being flung about, and even a bit of ribbon dancing to rev up the punters.

The set was full of originals and a few covers, all wrapped up with a twangy version of Letā€™s Lynch the Landlord and a rollicking version of Ace of Spades.

Here’s a taste of their twangy goodness, but catch the show for a rollickin goodtime.

Baitones

The room was packed, ready for the Baitones and a bit of weirdness. Decked out in what they could steal from Lux Interiors wardrobe, the 3 piece immediately got to work and fuzzed out the room.

The set was made up of some classic 60s garage covers The Crusher, 5 years Ahead of My Time and god knows what else, but definitely fuzz soaked tunes that thumped, bumped and distorted their way down our weirded out earholes to our brains core.

There was even a bit of crowd participation – recruiting the front row to sing half of Surfin’ Bird while the band wailed on.

Sample their tone here, but donā€™t miss the show when it comes to your town.
