The Girts – The MoshPit – Sunday Sessions

It was a windy and wet Sunday afternoon, so what better to do than get along to the Sunday Sesh at the MoshPit in Newtown. This arvo there were three up and comers on offer. Headlining this arvo was The Girts, who are building up a head of steam in the inner west, capably supported by the always quirky Alex Fears and the sublime tones of Eva Diana.

Eva Diana

Eva Diana was up first with a guitar and voice that could melt steel strings. A last minute addition to the afternoons’ line-up, but there was no hesitation in dropping a stellar set of original tunes and even managing to throw in a cover of Blowing in the Wind.

Alex Fears

Alex Fears was up next, immediately filling the stage with a bit of cracking electricity. Bouncing around the stage wasn’t enough for them as they propelled into the crowd to whip up a bit of a frenzy with their quirky and sometimes jarring set of chaos laden – I want to say punk but it’s not that easy to pigeonhole. Check out Seven Eleven Racoons here and you make up your mind.

The Girts

And then it was Girt time. No introduction, just into it, like a sledgehammer through Gyproc in one of their demolition parties. Self-proclaimed as “cheeky”, they lived up to their bio – some rock, a bit of punk, some shouty lyrics and even a bit of anthemic dreaming of snowy Canadian peaks – all with a bit of tongue in cheeky – see what I did there…..

There was lots of twanging and riffing from a twin guitar onslaught, backed up by a rhythm section of bass and drum that would not stop. Not to be outdone, there was even some off stage excursions to scare the crowd and scatter photographers.
