The King Brothers bring their explosive brand of chaos from Japan to Australia. I was lucky enough to catch them at the Marrickville Bowlo on Saturday night with local noisemakers, Grinding Eyes.
Grinding Eyes
This three piece metaphorically lit up the Bowlo with a set of dark, droning proto punk. Metaphorically only, as the set blasted the Bowlo from a dark and gloomy stage, lit only by a couple of angled projectors casting an eerie glow on the ceiling.

The set was a continuum of tortured, screaming guitar, a train engine of drums and bass with some vocals that spat a bit of vitriol at the crowd.

A perfect warm up for the night of chaos ahead.

King Brothers
A quick equipment check & then it’s on for young and old.

The King Brothers are more of an experience rather than a musical act. From a noisy start with both guitars Keizo and Marya climbing on their amps and launching onto the stage, to wild writhing and screaming, while furiously cranking out some twangy blues tinged punk.

New drummer Genki was no slouch either, thumping the tubs with arms moving like mini windmills with sticks on the end.

Vocals were made up of crazy screams and blues explosion like calls of “SYDNEY, WE ARE KING BROTHERS!!”

Marya spent most of the time being carried around the room on the arms of the crowd while screaming, throwing the mic at random people for them to join in or snatching filming mobile phones out of punters hands and licking the screens.

Towards the end of the set the Genki’s drum kit & Keizo’s guitar gets transferred to the middle of the floor to continue the chaos in amongst the punters, all while Marya is carried around them on the shoulders of the crowd like an anti-circle pit.

Don’t hesitate to catch the unadulterated wild and crazy show that is the King Brothers if it comes to a town near you. You snooze, you lose!
